Name: Laurel Gill

Location: San Diego, CA

Occupation: Meteorology Oceanography Officer in the US. Navy

Favorite course: Torrey Pines

Why did you start playing golf?

My parents sent me to golf camp when I was little. My mom wanted my sister and I to be able to golf because it's so prevalent in the business world. She made sure we were always signed up for lessons while my dad helped teach us how to play and took us out on the course.

Why did you join WWD?

I think it's awesome there's a group of women supporting each other in a male dominated sport. I love that it's not about how you look or how you play; it's about the love of the game. As a female golfer there's a lot more criticism from EVERYONE and WWD is a platform to encourage each other.

What is your favorite shot to hit?

Any shot that lands in the fairway or on the green.

What is your favorite golf apparel brand right now?

I wear a lot of different brands. Really whatever fits me... I'm definitely more into golf equipment. I have the TaylorMade M1 driver, TaylorMade Aeroburner 3W and hybrids, Mizuno JPX-900 irons, Vokey SM5 wedges and a Scotty Cameron 2015 MyGirl putter :)

What advice would you give to a woman just beginning to play golf?

First of all, it doesn't matter how good you are. Second, start with the range and a par-3 course. Lastly, have fun! If you're not having fun then hit up the 19th hole.

Tell us a fun hidden talent or cool story about yourself.

I'm really not that cool but I've gotten to do a lot of awesome things in the Navy like work with dolphins, fly planes and travel the world. The best part of my job is leading Sailors. The Navy has given me the opportunity to be in a position where I can have a positive impact on my Sailor's current job as well as their future careers. I'm really lucky to have such great Sailors in my department.

*Nikki B's note- Laurel is being very humble here. I found out she has one of the coolest jobs I've ever heard of, making her super cool! As a Meteorology Oceanography Officer in the Navy, Laurel forecasts the weather for ports across the globe and makes multi-million dollar decisions. At a young age, she has accomplished so much and we can't wait to see what else she does with her career and golf!*
