Golf Babe of the Month

October: Cassandra Blaney

Introducing our new "Golf Babe of the Month" program!  Each month we will select a #GBOTM to highlight with an emphasis on aspiring LPGA players.  As we peel the layers back, we hope you enjoy taking an inside look to their lives and passion for the game of golf.  Join us as we celebrate the beauty of the course and the "golf babes" that play it.

Golf babes is proud to introduce our inaugural #GBOTM Cassandra Blaney!  Don't get distracted by her beauty, she has a golf game to back it up.  We visited with Cassandra to talk about life on and off the course and her dream career of pursuing the LPGA. She's got it all...power, athleticism and it doesn't hurt she's a sweetheart too.  Follow Cassandra @cassmarie_b and get a front row seat to her journey.

A special thanks to our October sponsors: Sick Sticks Golf and gottaGolf!

Our Interview with Cassandra:

Name: Cassandra Blaney
Age: 25
Home Town: Orlando, Florida
Day job: Beverage cart attendant
Years playing: 15 years

What got you started?

My parents played golf for fun so my sister and I would always walk along and hit a shot here and there....I think it came pretty naturally to me when I was young so it was easy to get hooked! My grandpa always played as well so it was a way for me to spend more time with him.

What is your High school and/or Collegiate background?

I grew up in Rochester, NY and was home schooled through high school so I never played on a high school team. I traveled and played on junior tours and then turned professional when I was 18.

What is the best part of your game today?

The best part of my game is probably my distance. I've always been one of the longer hitters, although sometimes that means hitting fewer fairways, I still love that I can keep up with the boys!

Biggest area for improvement or challenge of your game today?

I would say I have the most room to grow mentally. Golf is a tough game on the mind. I don't have nearly as much experience as the girls that I play against because I couldn't afford to compete that much. I actually quit competing for a couple of years because I couldn't afford it. I just started back up again in February of this year so I have some catching up to do!

 How often do you play/Practice?

Well I work full time so I really only get to practice on average 3 full days a week. Sometimes I'll get in an hour or so after my shift on the beverage cart. Sometimes I'll work 4 days, play a tournament 3 days, and then go straight back to work! It's not ideal but I think someday it will all be worth it!

What 1 or 2 things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your development?

Right now just working on my attitude and perspective has been my main focus and it's making a really big difference in the way I feel on the golf course. I can be very impatient and put a lot of pressure on myself. Its so important for me to remember why I love this game and to be grateful that I'm getting the chance to compete again. Learning to enjoy every moment of the journey is so important! On the technical side, I've just been working on simplifying my transition a bit, I feel like my swing at the moment is the most efficient it's ever been! The next couple months Im going to be buckling down on this short game of mine!

What is your biggest accomplishment thus far?

I wish I had a more exciting answer for this one haha. Unfortunately I haven't accomplished much as a professional, so I would have to say being a member of the 2007 US Junior Ryder cup was one of the best experiences of my golf career.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

My friend always used to remind me to look at the big picture....no matter how I played, it always kept my perspective on track.

Do you have any recommended resources to share (books, seminars, coaches)?

I worked for Leadbetter Golf Academy for 7 years so I will always support their coaching!

What is your goal 1 year from today?

Last month I went back to qualifying school and gained some Symetra tour status for 2016 so I hope in a year I'm out there competing on the level I know I can! I'd also love to qualify for an LPGA event within the next year.

What would be your ultimate career achievement?

Obviously I want to be a successful Player on the LPGA but Im not sure my ultimate career achievement is anything specific like being number 1 in the world or winning a major. I just want to do what I love, be the best that I can be and use my talent for something good. I want to be able to give back to struggling professionals like me or kids who want to play and don't have the resources for it. Nothing would make me happier than that!

Who is your favorite athlete?

Favorite athlete....right now it would have to be Jason Day. I LOVE his golf swing and the way he handles himself on and off the course.

Your favorte thing to do/hobby when you're not golfing

I don't have time for a lot of hobbies at the moment, most of my time is put into work and golf. I love the gym and weight training....I LOVE to cook!! And I have a pitbull who is pretty much like my child 😊

What is your favorite food?

Favorite food....that's hard, I love too many things to answer that question!

What is the #1 most played song or band on your iPod?

I listen to a lot of hard rock and metal....no one ever expects that answer but I love it! It makes me feel motivated! But the top played song has to be between hearts on fire or the training montage from the Rocky soundtrack lol. I'm a huge Rocky nerd so those songs get me through the hard parts of my workouts every time!

Who is your celebrity crush?

Has to be Chris Pratt....he's a cutie but he's also dedicated to his family and open about his faith. From what I've read he seems to have a really good perspective on Hollywood and fame.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

That would have to be watching the occasional reality tv show....I'm so ashamed lol but sometimes it happens!
